"Making Technology Work"

Case Study - Multinational Paper Manufacturer

EGS implemented a system for logging data from various machines in a paper mill. Data is read directly from the PLCs controlling the machines via an OPC server. This data comprises run times, reasons for stoppages, numbers of rolls cut etc. Once read from the PLC this data is written into a Microsoft® SQL server database.

The data collection was implemented using a flexible, configurable system for collecting data on various triggers. The system was set up to collect data on the times of each machine stoppage and to record the reason for each stoppage.

Reports on this data are then displayed to users via an intranet. The reports themselves were written by the customer's IT department and provide information on plant utilisation, production, efficiency, reasons for stoppages etc.

System Benefits -

  • Better targetting of maintenance leading to improved efficiency and reduced waste.
  • Improved visibility of production information to senior management allowing better strategic planning
