"Making Technology Work"

Case Study - Multinational Toilet Tissue Manufacturer

EGS have implemented a system controlling 4 separate labelling stations in use on a 24x7 basis for labelling pallets of finished goods from a mill producing toilet tissue. Data is read directly from the PLCs controlling the machines (Siemens & TI) via a Kepware® OPC server. This data comprises product code, pack count and a stacked/not stacked flag. Once read from the PLC this data is used to look up additional information from an Oracle® database prior to creating a finished pallet label. Depending upon various criteria found within the database, pallet labels are required either on the pallet's Face, Side or both. Also using the stacked flag, labels may be applied to an optional top pallet.

In conjunction with the PLC, the system then controls a pair of Logopak pallet printers to apply labels to the relevant sides of each pallet. Once labelled, the label information is relayed back to the company's central Oracle server for accounting and stock control purposes.

System Benefits -

  • Fully automated system - operator intervention not required.
  • Improved Labelling accuracy and throughput.
  • Improved visibility of production information to senior management allowing better strategic planning
